Plastic Omnium, through its joint venture PO-Rein1, starts construction of a mega plant for the production of high-pressure hydrogen containers in Jiading, Shanghai. The new plant, scheduled to be operational in 2026, will produce up to 60,000 hydrogen containers and high-pressure hydrogen storage systems annually for the Chinese commercial vehicle market.

This future 28,000-square-meter mega-factory will be located in the Jiading Hydrogen Park, one of the country's major hydrogen development centers. It will complement Plastic Omnium's production capacity in Shanghai, where the group already has its first hydrogen container plant, which has been in operation since 2024.

This PO-Rein joint venture allows both partners to take full advantage of Plastic Omnium's technological leadership in high-pressure hydrogen storage and benefit from Rein's industrial footprint in the production of hydrogen transportation and storage systems for the Chinese market.

"This new plant is a concrete expression of our joint venture PO-Rein's ambitions in the Chinese hydrogen mobility market. It provides us with the production capacity we need to seize every opportunity to become one of the big winners in the country's mobility transformation. At the same time, we are accelerating the development of the entire hydrogen value chain and contributing to China's carbon neutrality plan," explains Plastic Omnium CEO Laurent Favre.

Shenergy Group president Ni Bin adds that he expects PO-Rein to seize the opportunity, actively pursue the construction of the plant and ensure that advanced hydrogen storage products can be brought to market as soon as possible. "This will not only give a new impetus to the company's development, but also make a new contribution to the growth of the hydrogen energy industry. It will promote the building of Shanghai as a hydrogen energy demonstration city and set an example for Sino-French trade and cultural exchanges."

Plastic Omnium is expanding its expertise, product portfolio and industrial footprint to reach €3 billion in hydrogen sales by 2030.
